In 1580, Lodewijk Elsevier (c. 1540–1617) from Louvain established himself in Leiden as a printer and bookseller. The house of Elsevier became one of the most important publishingfirms in the 17th century (along with Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp and Blaeu in Amsterdam). The Elsevier family published books by Hugo Grotius, Nicolaas Heinsius, and Simon Stevin, among others. The firm was liquidated in 1681. In 1880, a new publishing house was founded that adopted the Elsevier name (now Reed Elsevier).
